Biography

Nicholas Gilman, a young officer from the Continental Army, arrived late to the convention but quickly became a supporter of a strong national government. Representing New Hampshire, his vote was crucial in the final phases of the debate. He understood from his military service the weaknesses of the Articles of Confederation and worked with John Langdon to ensure New Hampshire's critical vote for ratification. He served in the first Federal Congress, helping to put the new Constitution into practice.
