Biography

Nathaniel Gorham of Massachusetts was one of the most important figures at the convention. As Chairman of the Committee of the Whole, he presided over the day-to-day debates for weeks, a role that required immense skill, fairness, and stamina. He was a pragmatist and a nationalist who helped steer the delegates through their most contentious arguments. Though he spoke often, his greatest contribution was his steady leadership from the chairman's seat.
