Biography

An Irish immigrant and former military surgeon who served as an aide to George Washington, Dr. James McHenry was a dedicated nationalist. Though his role in the debates was modest, he kept detailed private notes that have become invaluable to historians. He was a loyal supporter of the new Constitution and later served as the third Secretary of War, a position for which his military and administrative experience prepared him well.
