A wealthy Maryland planter and a man of great influence, Daniel of St. Thomas Jenifer was a firm nationalist who attended the convention with the express purpose of creating a stronger government. He was an old and trusted friend of George Washington and reliably supported Madison and the Virginia Plan. His vote was critical in securing Maryland's support for the new, more powerful federal structure.
